Episode 1 – Sex in Crisis, Magma Toys’ Phoenix, Madison Young’s Writers and Rockstars
August 13, 2008
This week, I’m proud to present the new and improved longform Live Girl Review – after seventy episodes, I’m going bigger and longer! And I’ll mention it right up front – I’ll be picking one of the first five commenters on this post to receive a delivery of free goodies! Details below in the list o’ links.
The episode is just under ten minutes long, and in addition to being available as a trusty old video podcast, I’m also producing an audio version, which you can check out at Libsyn and at iTunes as soon as its processed. At the moment, the audio version isn’t any different than the video (um, except the obvious), but in the future I may add longer interviews and such to the audio version.
I’ll be producing two of these long episodes every month, and they’ll go up on the second and fourth Wednesday. I’ll still occasionally produce a quickie episode too. Every marathon episode will feature a book, a movie, and a toy, plus other fun features – like special guest Jamye Waxman!
I’m also going to start adding contributors and text reviews to the site – so if you write reviews on your blog and might be game for cross-posting them here on Live Girl Review, email me at dacia[at]livegirlreview[dot]com.
Here’s what you’ll find in the episode!
Reviews
Book: Dagmar Herzog’s Sex in Crisis: The New Sexual Revolution and the Future of American Politics
Sex Toy: Magma Toys’ Phoenix
Movie: Madison Young’s Writers and Rockstars — you can also see my review of her film Undone here on Live Girl Review
One Hot Minute – new feature!
My good pal sex educator Jamye Waxman is now the sex tip correspondent for Live Girl Review! In this episode, she dishes on deep dicking – or rather, shallow dicking.
Jamye is the author of Getting Off: A Woman’s Guide to Masturbation and host of the Personal Touch video series from Adam and Eve. My review of the first video, Toying With Pleasure was one of the very first videos I did for this site.
Bad Press – new feature!
Highlighting bad things you should avoid! This week’s shame-light (you know, like a bad spotlight?) goes to Vigorect, an “oral gel shooter” to improve erections. Ugh.
Fan Girl Moment – new feature!
I am having fan girl moment over The Wet Spots, and as a special treat, here’s a video of their live performance of the song “Kinky Neighbors.” I also did an episode of Naked City TV about them – you can see it here.
Goodies! – comment (with a moderate amount of thoughtfulness!) to win. I’ll pick one of the first five commenters as the winner, and you’ll receive the following:
Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica – the latest erotica anthology edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel
The ultimate couples kit – vibes with multiple attachments

Got something to say?

I LOVE the new longer format! Bravo!
this made me spit laugh-water on my screen. more negative reviews!
Great episode and very funny. That is the weirdest dildo I have ever seen! How do you boil it without letting it touch the sides or bottom of the pot?
The official directions for the Phoenix say that it should be “simmered,” not boiled – and that you should wrap it in a towel so it doesn’t touch the sides of the pot.
Great info from the sexologist, thanks!
Would you consider reviewing “The Rabbit” (http://www.therabbitvibrator.com/)? I saw it used in an erotic video, but I can’t quite believe that it is as fantastic as it appears to be.
I’m also curious about electrostim. Is it safe? How would one go about finding the neccessary equipment?
Great to see you back Dacia!
Loving the new format.
Its good to see someone out there telling people to say no and stear clear of the gels and creams on the market that are quite obviuosly there to make a quick buck and not benefit the user. There are loads of products out there like this but the sad thing is once one dissapears it will only be replaced with another.
Keep up the great work!
(rats, my browser just crashed! writing again..)
Thanks for the Sex in Crisis review! I just graduated with my BA in (you guessed it) Religion and Gender Studies, and am surprised I haven’t run into this book before! I’m glad the author takes a well-rounded approach, as I get tired of both the Christian Right and the sex positive community making accusations of each other that are simplistic and poorly-informed. Nice to hear she actually dives into the topic.
To Gustav – Electrical play can be safe providing certain precautions (using the right equipment, avoiding the heart and eyes, etc.) are taken. Blowfish is a great sex toy supply place in San Francisco – you can find their page on electrostim equipment at http://www.blowfish.com/catalog/toys/estim.html. I don’t work for them or anything, I just like that they stock really high quality stuff with detailed descriptions and reviews. I wish I could find a good how-to book for you, but I’m coming up blank. Anyone?
I like the new format. The only thing I’d change would be to have a slightly longer pause between different parts.. it’s a bit jumpy right now. Just a half second of silence so the listener can better prepare for a shift in subject matter.
Very cool. I love the new format, especially, Bad Press. It’s nice to know what’s good but it’s sometimes more useful to know what to steer clear of.
I tend to agree that the transition between segments is a little sudden. Not so sudden that I felt lost. I just had a feeling once or twice like: “oh, we’re done with that now? Okay.”
Anyway, love it.
@Emma – thanks for the kind words!
@Gustav I’ll talk about the rabbit vibrators in the next episode, it’s on my list since you requested it!
There’s a really great book about electrostim called “Juice–Electricity for Pleasure and Pain.” The author, Uncle Abdul, also has an informative website: http://www.uncleabdul.com/
@Anna Sex in Crisis has only been out for about a month, so it’s a pretty new title and just starting to make the rounds.
@Tim and @Sean – a few other people have commented about the slightly jarring cuts between sections… I’m going to work on better transitions for the next episode.
Also: sporkfoo you’re the winner! Congrats!
hey your show is neat. Great attitude, thoughtful.
But I think yo should speak from the heart more. The show feels a little more today show than late night.
Also you need some music cues to keep us going and transition grafix…
keep up the intellectual and physical rigor!
Awww… missed the first 5 people deadline, and you wrote about a handful of my favorite sexual subjects/people – shallow thrusting, Madison Young and the Wet Spots! In fact, we had just been listening to the Wet Spots here at work (a prodomme dungeon in the Bay Area) just before watching your review. I love the work you do, and am looking forward to watching future episodes of the Live Girl Review!
@mm – thanks for the constructive criticism! I’m working on some graphics right now and will hopefully have extra cool animated graphics in another month or so
@Lilithe M – I plan to do give aways with every episode, so you haven’t totally missed out!
Hi Dacia – love the new format (I really enjoyed the old format too, so was prepared to be cautious about this), and think you’ve done a great job. Really enjoyed the reviews, Jamye’s segment, and the fagirliness
xx Dee
Hey, I just finished viewing several episodes of Live Girl Review for the first time. Although my political views about pornography may differ from yours, you give an insightful and sensible review of cultural texts and artifacts revolving around sex that is refreshing. I’m looking forward to viewing future episodes.
Based upon viewing older episodes, your new video format gives a bit more life to the show without losing content.
Hey there I think the format looks good! I wanted to comment on that weird dildo – my mom used to have this “heating pad” that worked just like that dildo, same metal disc and everything. However, the plus side with that heating pack was that you could microwave it to get it back to liquid state.
It seems odd, for sure.
I FINALLY got some time to watch this episode and it was very well worth it… I like that so much can be included in the new extended segments, although the shorter ones were engaging as well… sometimes you want a quickie, sometimes you wanna go for hours!
I love the long format! More bang for the buck… I mean for your viewing pleasure!
I will have to totally check out more of the Wet Spots! That was fantastic!
Bad reviews.. Always funny. I want more of the bad stuff.
ps. I love girls in glasses and your make up is super cute!
Great new format, Dacia. Very entertaining! and informative.
