About the host
Audacia Ray is an executive editor of $pread, a quarterly glossy print magazine by and for sex workers that won the Utne Independent Press Award for Best New Title in 2005 and was named Best Sex Worker Support System by the Village Voice in 2006. She contributed to the Gawker Media-owned porn blog Fleshbot for a year, writes a monthly column for Hot Movies for Her, and has maintained her own blog at WakingVixen.com for nearly four years.
For her first book, Naked on the Internet: Hookups, Downloads, and Cashing in on Internet Sexploration (Seal Press, June 2007), she interviewed 80 women on the subject of sexual expression and the Internet. She is also an internationally acclaimed director/producer whose first feature length porno, The Bi Apple (Adam & Eve Pictures, February 2007), won the Feminist Porn Award for Hottest Bi Sex Scene in June 2007. For the last two years, she has curated the “Sex Worker Visions” group art show for $pread, and currently curates bimonthly erotic art shows at Arena Studios in New York.
Audacia got her start in the sex world as a researcher and then assistant curator of the Museum of Sex, and then went on to work in HIV education and prevention at the Gay Men’s Health Crisis.
Clamor Magazine has called Audacia a “Jill of all media trades,” and her work has been covered by the New York Times, Oprah Magazine, Wired, Bitch, National Public Radio, Playboy Radio, Geraldo at Large, CNN News, Sex TV, and many others. In addition to her media appearances, Audacia is a frequent speaker at universities and conferences, and has given talks at New York University, Rutgers University, San Francisco State University, and many others. Upcoming speaking engagements include the Sex::Tech - Focus on Youth Conference in San Francisco, South by Southwest in Austin, and the Women, Action, and the Media conference in Boston.
Audacia has a BA in Cultural Studies from Eugene Lang College, an MA in American Studies from Columbia University and has studied at the Summer Institute on Sexuality, Culture and Society at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. She has also been trained in harm reduction and HIV/AIDS prevention in the Gay Men’s Health Crisis’ Community Education Volunteer Training program and at the Harm Reduction Training Institute.
